JC House

Program
Single-family house
Location
Chillán (Chile)
Year
2017 (project)

Located on the outskirts of Chillán, the surrounding landscape of the house is rural and inaccessible to the human eye. In the foreground, wooden fences that delimit properties, cows, and solitary trees can be seen. In the background, the snowy peaks of the Andes mountain range rise up.

The functional program is simple. The budget is limited. However, the client is unique: a philosopher who has decided to leave the city and retire to the countryside to write. The fundamental question arises: the relationship between inhabitant and landscape, territory, geography. The singular and human in connection with the immensity of the territory. How to relate these two areas? Answer: a space - the courtyard - bridging these two worlds: the domestic and the geographical.

The courtyard is the central space of this house, where the inhabitant spends most of their time writing, reading, and caring for aromatic plants. A courtyard that is an open garden to the rural landscape. A garden that is a reflection of the one who inhabits it.
