Raval is one of the densest neighborhoods in Barcelona: streets and plots of land are usually narrow. As a consequence, homes are long, dark, with poorly ventilated rooms, offering a lack of privacy from neighboring buildings.
It is proposed to locate the main staircase on the façade, inspired by the emergency stairs of many buildings in New York and the strict fire safety regulations of Barcelona.
Consequently, the stairs become a filter between the collective space -the street- and the domestic space -the house-, providing appropriate levels of privacy to the apartmens, while allowing all rooms to have adequate ventilation and lighting.
