Charlot square

Program
Party-wall refurbishment
Location

Year
2024 (competition)

The proposed intervention is expressed through the multiple meanings of the Spanish word jaleo. As an action to encourage, that is, as an act of cheering, the proposal promotes urbanity in the square in order to address the issues presented by the existing party wall in the area.

Firstly, it enhances environmental quality by opening new balconies that give urbanity to the square and improve the building’s habitability, and by solving the discontinuities of the cornices and the coverings of the two facades adjoining the intervention.

Secondly, it promotes biodiversity thanks to the birdhouses installed at the top of one of the cornices and the balconies designed for residents to place vegetation on the facade. Thirdly, it contributes to environmental sustainability and energy savings with the implementation of solar panels in the sunniest area, the installation of thermal insulation on the party wall, and the use of recycled and easily recyclable materials.

Finally, it stimulates social interaction among neighbours by installing a new bench and a small library that serves for book crossing, thus strengthening the social fabric and building an open and inclusive community of neighbours. It promotes the identity of the neighbourhood thanks to the nods to its architecture (the colours of the facade, the alicantine blinds, the plaster rendering), and the large-format graffiti-sgraffito representing Carmelo Tusquellas , popularly known as Charlot, a crucial figure in the neighbourhood’s history as its promoter and its first community activist. The adjacent square is dedicated to him.

But Jaleo is also a type of flamenco dance. A significant portion of the neighbourhood’s population has andalusian and gipsy roots, so flamenco and jaleo are part of Nou Barris district’s culture. In this sense, the proposed intervention seeks to express and connect with the idiosyncrasies of the neighbourhood just as flamenco expresses human passions, and in the case of jaleo, expressing joy and excitement. Like a jaleo dance, the proposed intervention is a play of architectural elements that come together in a festive and playful manner, reflecting the character of street life where flamenco and specifically, jaleo, are distinctive features.
